Are e-cigarette liquids universal? Let us clarify

Are e-cigarette liquids universal?

Published on: 10/06/2022

Liquids for electronic cigarettes are not all the same, and each one gives its best under particular conditions. Here are some practical tips for use

How great to be a vaper! There are thousands of electronic cigarette liquids for all tastes on the market, and vapers have the opportunity to experiment with a myriad of different products!

But does this mean that e-liquids are universal?

Many people ask themselves this question, especially cautious vapers who sometimes give up trying new products for fear that they cannot be used with their devices.

In this article, we will explain why it is not easy to give an unequivocal answer to this question, and we will provide some tips on which devices to use to make the most of the various types of e-cigarette liquids.

Composition of e-cigarette liquid: how to choose the ideal device

The answer to the question “Are e-cigarette liquids universal?” is neither a definite yes nor a definite no.

Any e-liquid can be used on any vaping device. Still, it only gives its best when used with specific instruments according to its flavour and VG (glycerol or vegetable glycerine) ratio to PG (propylene glycol).

Let’s start with the second characteristic I mentioned: the ratio of glycerol to the amount of propylene glycol.

Each of these substances has a specific task:

  • VG is a relatively dense substance with a sweetish taste that increases the quantity and body of the vapour produced during vaping;
  • On the other hand, PG improves the perception of the liquid’s aroma and makes the throat hit stronger, that feeling that vapers call ‘hit’.

There are e-liquids on the market with very different proportions of VG and PG, but in general, they can be divided into two types:

  • liquids suitable for cheek atomisers (MTL) – the ratio of glycerol to propylene glycol in these products varies from 40/60 to 50/50. They are not very dense, perform best when vaped at a wattage not exceeding 20 W and are recommended for use with resistances above 1 Ohm;
  • liquids suitable for lung atomisers (DTL) – as a rule, these e-liquids have a VG to PG ratio of 70/30, rarely 80/20. They are relatively dense, making them unsuitable for vaping with coils designed for MTL devices. When used with resistances below 1 Ohm and at high wattages, they are at their best.

Each electronic cigarette flavour is at its best with a certain device

Want to enjoy a particular flavour at its best? Here’s which device to vape it with

It may sound strange to you, but electronic cigarette liquids with different flavours perform best on other devices.

I want to preface this part of the article by saying that the tips I am going to write should not be taken as absolute rules. Feel free to break them to experiment in complete freedom – that is the beauty of vaping!

Let’s start with tobacco liquids. For most vapers, these products taste best when vaped with cheek devices at low wattages. I advise against using them with lung atomisers because they may be too ‘aggressive’ for your palate, especially those with a rather pronounced flavour such as latakia.

On the other hand, Fruity liquids are outstanding for DTL shooting, especially on hot summer days. My suggestion is to vape them at medium wattages without exceeding 40/50 watts. Their taste is much more pleasant at low wattages, especially when they contain refreshing additives such as menthol.

As for creamy liquids, I have no precise advice to give you. I prefer to vape them with DTL atomisers, but they are also delicious when used with cheek devices. If you choose a lung shot, know that you can afford to go beyond the recommended limit for fruity liquids: creamy liquids are also excellent when vaped at 70/80 watts. If you love hot vapour, be careful to use resistors capable of withstanding these wattages. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting a ‘splat’!

In conclusion

E-liquids are universal, and they can be vaped with any electronic cigarette. However, if you want to make the most of the characteristics of the various types of liquids, you should choose which device to combine with each of them.

Follow the tips I have given you, and your vaping sessions will be much more enjoyable, especially if you buy well-balanced and quality e-liquids.
