Clarification of the price increases for analogue cigarettes and tips on how to stop buying them again

Until a few years ago, the cost of buying a packet of cigarettes a day was affordable for almost everyone. Today, however, smoking is becoming more and more expensive.

The cost of cigarettes has skyrocketed!

This year we have seen a further increase in prices… and that’s not all! It seems that this is only the beginning of a series of price increases that will last until 2023.

But how much will cigarettes cost in 2021?

Do the increases also apply to electronic cigarettes?

Here are the clarifications on a much-discussed topic that, unfortunately, affects many Italians.

Spending on cigarettes

Cigarette prices in 2021: this year’s increase is just the beginning

The fact that the price of cigarettes is increasing dramatically is no mystery.

According to the Budget Law of 2021, it will soon be impossible to find cigarettes that cost 4 euros or less.

In 2021, there was a 10-15% increase. In 2022 cigarette prices will rise by 15/20%, and in 2022 by as much as 20/25%.

To sum up, there will be a 5% annual increase, both on tobacco prices and on the prices of liquids for electronic cigarettes (which have been under the control of the State Monopoly since January 2018).

The new laws also foresee a change in the tax rate for smokeless inhalation tobacco: 30% in 2021, 35% in 2022 and 40% in 2023.

If you want to get a better idea of the price of cigarettes in 2021, the cheapest cigarettes cost €4, the most expensive over €6.

For more details, you can consult the complete list on the Agency of Excise, Customs and Monopolies (ADM) website.

But what is the purpose of these price increases?

To enrich the coffers of the State?

As we said before, the motivation behind these decisions is to protect the health of (too many) smokers. It is a manoeuvre designed to discourage smokers from buying cigarettes and induce them to find a solution to quit smoking once and for all.

Heavy smokers will likely tend to buy cigarettes that cost less than their regular cigarettes, while others will have to do the math and decide whether to go ahead or fight the smoking habit.

Unfortunately, quitting smoking is not easy: it involves nicotine addiction, the habit of doing the same old thing.

How can this be remedied?

Remedies to stop smoking: here are the most popular ones

Some people can quit smoking simply because of their willpower; others, on the other hand, try very hard but always end up falling off the wagon again.

Fortunately, however, several remedies have been developed to help smokers kick the habit. Some of the most widely used are

  • nicotine patches;
  • chewing gum;
  • electronic cigarette.

Patches stick to the skin to release nicotine into the body through the skin. Due to their action, it is easier to resist the temptation to smoke cigarettes and, as a result, the likelihood of quitting increases.

Of course, their use should be limited to the time needed to free oneself from tobacco addiction, after which they should be put aside.

Nicotine gum has virtually the same function as patches but is used differently. To benefit from their action, all you have to do is chew them when the temptation to light a cigarette arises.

Chewing gum also releases nicotine, so it is essential not to abuse it and to stop using it as soon as it is no longer needed.

Man using e-cigarette to quit smoking

Finally, the e-cigarette is most successful with those who find it difficult to refrain from the typical smoking gestures (bringing the cigarette to the face, inhaling and exhaling the smoke) and tobacco aromas.

With an electronic cigarette, it is possible to start vaping tobacco liquids with nicotine so that you don’t miss the classic ‘blondes’ and don’t feel the effects of withdrawal (headaches, nausea, nervousness…).

If you use e-cigarettes, you can start vaping and immediately eliminate the hundreds of harmful substances produced by tobacco combustion.

In addition, each time the device is refilled, they can change the percentage of liquid nicotine in the vape liquids, gradually decreasing it to beat the addiction once and for all.

To conclude

As we’ve seen, cigarette prices have risen again this year and are set to increase further: one more reason – in addition to health issues – to try and kick the smoking habit.
